Château Castigno Secret du Dieux Saint Chinian 2011

Colour: Clear medium ruby

Nose: Lower intensity nose, dates, ripe red cherry, touch of plum sauce, liquorice.

Palate: Dry, medium+ bodied, medium acidity, medium+ tannins. Plum, red cherry, touch of pine.

Finish: Medium+ finish, spice and dark fruits.

Score: 76/100

Drinking well now, could also use a few more years in the cellar.

Bolla Le Origini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2009

Colour: Clear medium garnet

Nose: Surprisingly savoury nose, roasted red pepper, smoked meat, undertone of dried cherry, plum, and a touch of peppercorn.

Palate: Dry, medium-full bodied, medium+ acidity, medium tannins. Cherry, plum, integrated oak, Chinese five spice, hints of tobacco.

Finish: Long finish, soft plum.

Score:82/100

The roasted red pepper note caught me off-guard, surprisingly savoury and dry for Amarone, guessing more producer these days trying to go for a drier Amarone rather than an off-dry style.

Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona Brunello di Montalcino 2011

Colour: Clear medium garnet

Nose: Cured meat, white-out, cherry, dried strawberry, raspberry, plum, and a touch salt.

Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, high acidity, medium tannins. Plum, cured meat, liquorice, cherry candy, touch of dry flower.

Finish: Long finish, touch of oak and salt.

Score: 84/100

Still needs a few more years to get things together, got good complexity and structure to back it up. While the 2011 is approachable now, I’d say cellar for at least 3-5 more years and check back.

Gundlach Bundschu Vintage Reserve Red 2012

Colour: Clear dark purple core

Nose: Strong liquorice, blackberry, blackcurrant, green leafy note, oil paint, hint of eucalyptus.

Palate: Full-bodied, medium+ acidity, high grippy tannins. Plums, black currant, black cherry, touch of green note again, mineral.

Finish: Long finish, plums and oak.

Score: 82/100

Prime example of really ripe crop, have decent complexity and structure for further development, the tannins needs to be soften up for another 5 or so years. Personally not my style.

Domaine Dublère Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2014

Colour: Pale straw

Nose: Elegant floral nose, with notes of lemon, crushed stones, touch of grass and vanilla, dried honey, all very well integrated.

Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, medium acidity. Very complex, pineapples, peaches, mineral, and a touch of oak. All notes are in harmony.

Finish: Long finish, well integrated oak and mineral note.

Score:87+/100

Very high quality white Burgundy, everything is so well integrated together which makes it harder to pick out all the notes. This is how real Burgundy should behave, elegant, refined, and harmonized. I can see it ageing well for the next 7-12 years.

Domaine Antonin Guyon Les Cras Chambolle-Musigny 2012

Colour: Clear light ruby core

Nose: Whiff of smoke, greeted by a very savoury nose, ripe apricot, red cherry, sun dried tomato, perfume.

Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, high acidity, medium- tannins. Plum, dusty oak, sour cherry, Chinese medicinal herbs.

Finish: Medium+ finish, plum, mineral, and herbal note.

Score:81+/100

Feels very closed at the moment, more savoury than I would expect. great structure for further development. Should tuck this away for at least the next 5-10 years.

Rizieri Sori del Ricchino Dolcetto di Diano d’Alba 2015

Colour: Clear medium purple core

Nose: Very pronounced cherry candy nose, strawberry swirl candy(crème saver), stone.

Palate: Dry, full-bodied, medium acidity, high grippy tannins. Strawberry gum, mineral, and a touch of oak.

Finish: Long finish, strawberry candy, touch of spice.

Score: 72+/100

One dimensional, fruit forward, strawberry dominant thorough-out, lacks balance.

Teodosio Aglianico del Vulture 2011

Colour: Clear medium+ ruby core

Nose: Herbal, diluted cola, black cherry, plums, mineral, and cedar.

Palate: Full-bodied, medium acidity, high grippy tannins, salt, black cherry, black raspberry, crushed stones, touch of tobacco and liquorice.

Finish: Medium+ finish, salty, leather, black raspberry.

Score:80+/100

Very surprising quality, showing good complexity and structure. Should evolve over the next 3-5 years.

Small Gully Mr. Black’s Concoction Shiraz/Viognier 2013

Colour: Medium+ purple core

Nose: Immediately greeted by a whiff of smoke, followed by black cherry and black raspberry, liquorice and baking spices.

Palate: Full bodied, medium+ acidity, medium silky tannins. Spices and dark fruits in harmony, a touch of well integrated oak and vanilla. The fruit is well balanced with acidity.

Finish: Long finish, black cherry and lingering spices.

Score: 81/100

I have to admit I have a soft spot for a smoky wine, and this wine delivers. Also at a fantastic price point consider I got it for $18CAD($13.50USD) on a store clearance.

Ortas/Cave de Rasteau Les Hauts du Village Rasteau 2010

Ortas/Cave de Rasteau Les Hauts du Village Rasteau 2010

Colour: Dark purple core

Nose: Very concentrated nose of mulberry, black raspberry, black cherry, spices. Can’t escape the dark fruits!

Palate: Full-bodied, medium+ acidity, medium tannins. Again very rich and concentrated, the array of dark fruits from the nose translated well onto the palate, along with touch of baking spices.

Finish: Medium+ length, spicy.

Score: 78/100

Changing up my scoring scheme, here is the updated one.

Price does not affect scores

0-49 = Terrible

50-59 = Bad

60-79 = Ok-Good

80-84 = Good

85-89 = Very Good

90-95 = Excellent

96-99 = Magnificent

100 = Legendary

Gets exponentially harder to score higher, only the exceptional ones deserves 90+.

Aultmore 22 Year Old (SMWS 73.69 – Dark Side Eclipsed by Sweet Joys)

Aultmore 22 Year Old (SMWS 73.69 – Dark Side Eclipsed by Sweet Joys)

I was suggested to review before looking up the distillery code and cask info, which is what I would be doing below!

[The info will be filled up after my tasting notes]

Region: Speyside
ABV: 52.9%
E150: No
Chill-filtered: No

Colour: Light gold

Nose: Right off the bat, sherry cask! Strawberry jam, orange peel, red cherry, raisin, toffee, glazed roast duck (is this the roast duck dram? That I’ve read about?), cocoa powder, oak, baking spice.

Palate: Strawberry jam, sweet malt, cereal, nuts, espresso, ginger, cola.

Finish: Long and spicy, ginger, pepper, oak tannins, mineral water.

Score: 87/100

My guess: 18-20 Year old, refill sherry cask, Speyside/Highland malt?
After looking up: Aultmore 22Y, 52.9%, Refill sherry butt.

Schroder & Schyler Margaux Private Reserve 1982

9aefc0ed2a0c45729699e1b5eb3a2c25.jpg

Schroder & Schyler Margaux Private Reserve 1982

Schroder & Schyler own’s the famous Margaux third growth winery – Chateau Kirwan, and this is their “Private Reserve label”, which other than Margaux they also produce a Medoc and Saint-Emilion variant. This particular wine is made from 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Bottled at 12% ABV.

Colour: Medium-tawny core, light red rim.

Nose: Clean nose, worn leather, dust, plum, red currant, dark cherry, touch of spice, faint liquorice.

Palate: Dry, medium- body, medium- acidity, low-medium tannis, dusty plum, red raspberry, cured meat, touch herbal.

Finish: Medium long finish, faint suggestion of dried chili pepper.

Score: 81/100
Do note I score tighter than the average

The top part of the cork didn’t look alright, but after carefully inserting my corkpops needle into the cork via a lot of twisting and fiddling, the cork appears to be fine below.
Surprisingly it’s still alive, got some decent notes from it, but it’s definitely way past it’s prime, doesn’t have the powerful complexity of the more modern Margaux I’ve tried, and this is no match to Chateau Margaux 1982 for obvious reasons. Still have a bottle of Chateau Margaux 1982, will open that in the future and post notes.

Masi Campofiorin 2013

Masi Campofiorin 2013

A very popular wine in Masi’s lineup, also I believe it’s one of their cheapest? Let’s dive in!

Left in the glass for an hour before consumption.

Colour: Deep ruby core

Nose: Clean nose, intense black cherries, red cherries, red currant, touch of oak and spice.

Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, high acidity, medium- tannins, juicy red cherries, plums.

Finish: Medium finish, plums and touch of pepper.

Score:74/100

Note my scores are tighter than average.

Very solid wine, the nose is very pleasant with waves of sweet red fruits. The high acidity of this wine is mouthwatering, giving the impression of juicy fruits and a touch of spice on the palate. Lacks complexity, at this price point I would be much happier shopping for wines like San Vincenti Chianti Classico 2012 which happens to be slightly cheaper as well.

The wine drinks well on its own or with food such as steak or grilled sausages, and pizza. Great for those looking for something that is easy-drinking.

Chateau Saint-Arnaud Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 1993

Left breathing for 1 hour.

kSK7ylO.jpg

Colour: Tawny, clear core.

Nose: Initially closed up, showing cured meat, leather, touch of black fruits. After an hour, the nose opened up, with aromas of plums, liquorice, cherries, and a faint hint of vanilla.

Palate: Dry, medium+ acidity, fine grainy tannins, plums, sour cherries, touch of old wood.

Finish: Short to medium finish, sour cherries and touch of oak.

Score: 70/100

Always interesting diving into older wines, 1993 isn’t a good vintage for Saint-Emilion, and this wine is showing that. Definitely past it’s prime, the nose is what you expect from old Bordeaux, the palate falls short on the simple side.

Bowmore 18 Year Old, SMWS 3.270 (18 Year Old “Surf ‘n turf in a camel’s saddle bag”)

Bowmore 18 Year Old

Region: Islay
ABV: 43%
E150: Yes
Chill-filtered: Yes

Container: Glencairn Neat

Colour: Amber

Nose: Caramel, brine, raspberry, light peat, citrus, floral, creamy corn.

Palate: Peat, oak, vanilla, creamy corn, light ash, red fruits, touch mineral.

Finish: Short finish, oak, earth, mineral water, cough syrup, touch of spice.

Score: 80/100

Surprisingly decent, had the 12 before and wasn’t a fan. Although I enjoy their Tempest and Laimrig. The finish is definitely the weak point, just as I was about to detect more flavour, it just disappears all together. I blame the 43% ABV.

Bowmore 18 Year Old 1997 (SMWS 3.270 “Surf ‘n turf in a camel’s saddle bag”)

Region: Islay
ABV: 55.8%
E150: No
Chill-filtered: No
Cask type: Refill Sherry Butt

Container: Glencairn Neat

Colour: Amber

Nose: Strawberry, raisins, Chinese plum sauce, caramel, ash, faint rubber, leather, cocoa.

Palate: Ash, peat, black tea, ginger, caramel, apple skin, plums.

Finish: Long finish, smoke, oak, baking spice, red fruits, touch of mineral during in the end.

Score: 87/100

Rather different from the Bowmore I’ve tried, the sherry cask is shining through, while maintaining balance with the ashy peat, sweetness along with ash and spice. Looking forward to try out more Bowmore IB in the future!

Not a fair game for the OB 18 Year Old, the 3.270 is miles ahead in terms of complexity and presentation, probably should’ve reviewed them separately.
